Repairing Stucco So It Stays Repaired

Stucco repair covers everything from a fist-sized hole to a section of wall that has come loose from its lath. What these jobs share is that the visible damage is rarely the whole problem. Stucco is a hard, cement-based skin, and when it breaks or stains it is usually telling you that water, movement or impact has been working on it. A good repair finds that cause, removes everything that has failed, and rebuilds the wall so the patch does not stand out or crack at its edges the next winter.

Signs your stucco needs repair

  • Cracks wider than a hairline, or cracks that open and close with the seasons
  • Dark streaks or stains below window corners, light fixtures or roof edges
  • Areas that sound hollow when tapped, or bulge out from the wall
  • Crumbling stucco near the ground, especially where soil or mulch touches it
  • A past patch with a visible outline or a crack running around it
  • Peeling paint or efflorescence (white, powdery deposits) on the surface

Why Minnesota stucco breaks down

In Minneapolis, water that gets into stucco in the fall can freeze several times before spring. Each freeze pushes cracks a little wider. The worst damage tends to show up below windows and at roof-to-wall intersections, where the City of Woodbury found missing or poorly installed flashing was a primary cause of stucco failures. Where the bottom of the stucco is buried in soil or mulch, the base wicks water and breaks down from below.

How we repair damaged stucco

We cut the damaged area back to sound, well-bonded stucco and square the edges so the new material keys in cleanly. If the building paper or lath is torn or rusted, it is replaced, and wet sheathing is cut out rather than covered. The National Park Service recommends that new material not overlap the old stucco, and that the repair follow the original layers: a scratch coat, a brown coat and a finish coat, with curing time between them. We follow that approach on traditional stucco and use matching materials on acrylic finishes and EIFS.

Matching texture and color

A patch only disappears if the finish matches. Minneapolis homes carry a wide range of finishes: dash, float, sand, lace and smooth. We match the texture in the finish coat and the color either with an integrally colored finish or a breathable coating. Small patches on a large, weathered wall may never match perfectly on their own, so we tell you up front when a finish coat or recoat over the whole elevation will give a better result.

Weather and timing

Cement stucco needs above-freezing temperatures to cure properly, and the National Park Service advises against working below about 40°F or when frost is possible. In Minneapolis that means most repairs happen from spring through fall. If you have an active leak in winter, we can protect the area temporarily and schedule the full repair when the weather allows.

How It Works

1. Inspect the wall

We map cracks, stains, hollow spots and flashing details, and check grade at the base.

2. Fix the cause

Flashing, sealant joints, grading or gutters are corrected before stucco goes back.

3. Rebuild in layers

Failed stucco is cut out, paper and lath replaced, and new coats applied with curing time.

4. Match and clean up

The finish coat is matched to the wall and the site is cleaned before we leave.

Stucco Repair Questions

How much does it cost to repair stucco?

HomeAdvisor's 2026 figures put most stucco repairs between $599 and $2,661, with minor patches at $200 to $600. Repairs involving water damage run about $30 to $50 per square foot. We give a written price after seeing the wall.

Can stucco be patched so it does not show?

Often, if the texture and color are matched in the finish coat. On a large, weathered wall a single patch can still read as newer, so a finish coat over the whole elevation is sometimes the better choice. We tell you which to expect at the estimate.

Why does my stucco keep cracking in the same place?

Usually because the cause was never fixed: a leak behind the wall, movement at a corner or opening, or a patch made with a mix that does not match the wall. We look for the cause before repairing the crack again.

Is stucco damage covered by homeowners insurance?

That depends on your policy and the cause of the damage, and only your insurer can answer it. Many policies treat long-term leaks differently from sudden events. We can document what we find so you have it for any conversation with your insurer.
