Older Roseville Stucco Needs a Lighter Touch
Stucco repair in Roseville often means working on stucco from the first wave of suburban building around the two downtowns. Roseville grew quickly during the 1930s and 1940s, incorporated as a village in 1948, and then went from 6,437 residents in 1950 to 23,997 in 1960. Homes from those years can have stucco that is quite different from what goes on walls today, and a repair has to respect that.
What changed in stucco over time
According to the National Park Service, stucco became a major house finish around 1890 and stayed popular into the 1930s and 1940s, on bungalows, four-squares, Tudor Revival and Mediterranean-style homes and more. Portland cement was first made in the United States in 1871, and after about 1900 most stucco was mainly portland cement mixed with some lime. But the change was uneven: some plasterers kept using lime well into the twentieth century. On a Roseville home from the 1930s or 1940s, the stucco may be harder or softer depending on who put it on.
Why a hard patch can crack an old wall
The Park Service warns that rigid portland cement is incompatible with early, mostly soft lime-based stucco. The two expand and contract at different rates, and a hard patch normally causes the stucco around it to crack. Water then gets in through those cracks, and the old stucco next to the patch starts to fail. It is a common reason we see repairs that "keep spreading" on older homes. Before we mix anything, we look at how hard the existing stucco is, how it breaks and how it is layered, and match the patch to it.
Our approach on older Roseville homes
- Look before we cut: tap the walls for hollow spots and map cracks and old patches.
- Remove only what is failing: sound older stucco is worth keeping; we cut back to firm material with clean, undercut edges.
- Use a compatible mix: softer, more lime-rich mixes where the original is soft, and stronger mixes only where the wall calls for them.
- Do not feather over old work: new stucco fills the repair area instead of being smeared over the surrounding surface, which leaves a weak, visible edge.
- Match texture and color: many older homes have distinctive hand textures, which we reproduce by hand.
Patching after other work
Roseville's housing has been updated many times since the 1950s: new windows, added doors, removed chimneys, new vents and electrical. Each leaves a scar in the stucco, and older patches from those jobs often do not match. We can rework those spots so the wall reads as one surface again, and replace cracked or crumbling patching at window and door openings.
Weather and timing
The 45th parallel crosses Roseville at Cleveland Avenue and Loren Road, and the city has true Minnesota winters, with a January daily mean around 16.2°F. Stucco should not be applied below 40°F or with frost expected, and fresh work needs to stay damp for a few days in summer heat. We schedule repairs on older homes for spring and fall when possible, since slow, even curing is especially important for softer mixes.
Close to both downtowns
Roseville is one of two suburbs that border both Saint Paul and Minneapolis, so it is a short drive for us. Saint Paul, next door, runs its own separate stucco and plaster permit with a lath inspection, so rules differ from city to city. When a repair goes past small patching, we confirm Roseville's requirements before work starts.

Roseville History and Housing
- Early suburban growth. Roseville grew rapidly in the 1930s and 1940s and incorporated as a village in 1948. Its population rose from 6,437 in 1950 to 23,997 in 1960 and 34,438 in 1970.
- Stucco of that era varies. The National Park Service notes stucco was popular from about 1890 into the 1930s and 1940s; after about 1900 most stucco was mainly portland cement with some lime, but some plasterers kept using lime well into the twentieth century.
- Hard patches crack soft walls. Park Service guidance says rigid portland cement is incompatible with early, soft lime-based stucco; the two expand and contract at different rates, which will normally cause the surrounding stucco to crack.
- Ownership and household size. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 show 66.4% of Roseville homes are owner-occupied, with a median owner-occupied value of $352,100, 2.20 persons per household and 86.6% of residents in the same house a year earlier.

Roseville Questions
My Roseville house is from the 1940s. Is the stucco lime or portland?
It could be either, or a blend. After about 1900 most stucco was portland-based with some lime, but some plasterers kept using lime longer. We check hardness and how the old material breaks before choosing a repair mix.
Why did an earlier patch on my house crack around its edges?
Often because it was harder than the original wall. A rigid patch and softer old stucco move differently, and the joint between them cracks. We cut out failing patches and redo them with a compatible mix.
Should I just re-side over the old stucco?
Sound older stucco can last a very long time with proper repair. Covering it hides problems instead of fixing them and changes the character of the house. We will tell you honestly if a wall is past saving.
Is Roseville's permit process the same as Saint Paul's?
No. Saint Paul has its own stucco and plaster permit with a lath inspection. Roseville's rules are its own, and we confirm what the city requires for larger repairs before starting.
